Week 4 Part A: Defining Target Markets
I chose to observe the two sandwich businesses since I personally love eating Subway but have never heard of the other chain until today. This will help give me not only a deeper insight into chains that I'm respectively familiar and unfamiliar with, but also how size parity does not always affect product advertisement.
As for basic observations, the Subway website definitely appears to be more "bland", complementing the "less is more" motto with simple coloring and design. On the contrary, the Hungry Bear Deli website looks much more decorative and welcoming, with its great color blends and design. The website feels packed but in a very clean and not overwhelming way, while Subway has a lot of empty space that can easily be filled with the likes of enlarged images or even just simple coloring designs. The only relatively subtle difference I was able to notice was when you hover over section titles on the Deli, there's a cool effect that indicates the effort that was put into the development of this website. This, however, was not reciprocated in Subways.
Since both of these companies are sandwich chains, there will definitely be a crossover of customers. However, these types of situations are probably more competitive as opposed to familial as both chains vye for success. Speaking of familial, although I've never been to Hungry Bear Deli, I can tell that it would be a much more welcoming "feel at home" type restaurant from their website design. From a similar analysis, Subway's website matches their ideals a lot as just a "buy a yummy sandwich and leave" type of energy. There is nothing wrong with this of course and at times I even prefer it, but It's definitely a noticeable difference.
Overall, I see the customers of Subway to be more business-oriented, and people who want to grab a quick lunch before heading to work or some other place. Other types of customers may be students with cheaper budgets and closer proximity as Subway is a widely renowned chain in the United States. As for Hungry Bear Deli, I feel like their typical customers would be similar to Subways, however including full families for people who want to sit inside and enjoy instead of picking up the food to go. Overall, I'm sure that these sandwich chains have mildly different but mostly similar consumers and customers that crossover!
