Week1 B: Social Media Use Today

Social media use has become much more prevalent with respect to technological advancements throughout the years. As someone who grew up using all sorts of social media platforms to explore, communicate, and connect, I can confidently say that there are many positives and negatives.

To begin with my own experiences, I've actually been running a YouTube channel since 2019 to share my gaming videos with people within the online gaming community. I've managed to garner a rather large audience of over two hundred thousand subscribers with about two hundred million views throughout this time, which came with a lot of great but also angry experiences/interactions.

One thing I would like to point out is how in the online world, basically "anything goes". Repercussions are overshadowed by anonymous profiles but this has actually personally helped me a lot. It's really to each its own, but after properly experiencing online negativity over the course of the years, I've actually grown quite immune to it and sometimes even become the negative propagator.

On the bright side, social media does platform many amazing people and can help anyone with access to learn/see practically anything. Additionally, if you really think about it, everything is optional. Comments can be turned off, users can be blocked, and apps can be deleted. If you really convince yourself that these virtual communications or conflicts aren't important in your life, it will facilitate the use of social media in a solely positive manner.

With that being said, like all well-known things, there is a good and a bad side. I personally believe that social media is useful if properly managed. This includes screen time as scrolling through apps or texting strangers on the internet can easily become an addiction. So basically stay safe, filter out all the unwanted, manage your time, and enjoy!
