Week 2 Part B - Business Research

Amazon

  1. https://www.amazon.com/
  2. Amazon is a huge business centered around the shipping of all sorts of products all throughout the world.
  3. Upon research, the biggest social media applications that Amazon uses is Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram. These social media accounts were not linked to their official website and I had to search for it myself. When I checked their twitter, they do post advertisement skits and media regularly, however, engagement seems very low. YouTube, on the other hand, seems to take a different approach with less frequent posts but higher engagement and reactions. From what I'm seeing, the videos are a mixture of sneaky advertisements as well as what seems like guides and tutorials of some sort. Their other social media accounts seem to follow a similar trajectory to Twitter.
  • Facebook: last posted 16 hours ago with 29 million followers.
  • YouTube: last posted 4 weeks ago with 816k subscribers.
  • Twitter: last posted 13 hours ago with 6 million followers.
  • Instagram: last posted 16 hours ago with 5.4 million followers.
4. Overall, I've noticed with Amazon that they interact and post regularly on most social media accounts. The one exception is YouTube which is completely understandable as long-form content creation can take time to produce. I've actually taken a look just now and realized that they post very consistent shorts on their YouTube account so the inactive metric that I stated above is not exactly true. I won't change it, however, as these shorts seem very unfulfilling and lazy product advertisements and the full-length commercials are clearly the bread getters.

In and Out
  1.  https://www.in-n-out.com/
  2. In and Out is a fast-food burger chain that is primarily located on the west side of the United States, including California. It is not the most popular business due to its limited reach.
  3. The biggest social media platforms that this business uses include Facebook and Twitter. These links were (similarly to Amazon) not located on their official website and I had to search for them myself.
  • Twitter: last posted 1 hour ago with 59k followers. Fun fact, I chose In and Out since I've noticed that whoever's been managing the account has been doing a fantastic job and tweeting with a younger demographic's humorous style of advertisement, thus generating up to millions of interactions on posts.
  • Facebook: last posted 4 days ago with 2.7 million followers.
4. Although not nearly as big of a business as Amazon, I was surprised by both the amount of engagement the twitter account reached and also how few social media accounts they run. I was convinced that they would have an Instagram, YouTube, or Tiktok but I was wrong! Overall, I've noticed, especially just being relatively active on the app, that twitter is a great haven for business promotion and expansion if done properly. In and Out's twitter account is a prime example of this: blending humor with advertisement.

Supercell
  1.  https://supercell.com/en/
  2. Supercell is a mobile gaming company that is responsible for the creation of global hits such as Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, and Brawl Stars. These games reach an international audience and is very popular among the youth especially.
  3. The supercell website includes the links to all their social media accounts which primarily includes YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
  • YouTube: last posted 2 months ago with 1.04 million subscribers.
  • Facebook: last posted 18 hours with 1.2 million followers.
  • Instagram: last posted 19 hours ago with 2.3 million followers.
  • Twitter: last posted 18 hours ago with 1.1 million followers.
4. Supercell seems to be very active on all social media applications besides YouTube. Posting game advertisements with occasional special guests, some within and some outside of the gaming community. Overall, as someone who plays Supercell games and is relatively in tune with their social media and promoting, I unbiasedly think they do a great job. Sometimes too good, however, which skews the expectations of game enjoyers and can cause a surge of upset.

Apple
  1.  https://www.apple.com/
  2. Apple is an international electronics business that is known for selling high-quality devices that can range from phones to computers and more.
  3. Since their social media connections are not linked to their official website, I did my own research and found the main ones: Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.
  • Instagram: last posted 14 hours ago with 33.9 million followers.
  • Twitter: 0 posts with 9.7 million followers! Very strange!
  • Facebook: last posted 2 month ago with 14 million followers.
  • YouTube: last posted 3 weeks ago with 19.8 million followers.
4. This was by far my weirdest find so far. They run a twitter account with a massive amount of followers, however not a single tweet or even retweet seems to be there! Besides that, their other account seems pretty active with noticeably higher-quality advertisements and more engagement.

Duolingo
  1.  https://www.duolingo.com/
  2. Duolingo is an online global app intended to help people linguistically. They are a pretty big business but not quite the size of Apple or Amazon.
  3. The primary social media platforms that Duolingo use consists of Tiktok, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. These are not directly connected with their official website.
  • Tiktok: last posted 2 hours ago with 15.2 million followers.
  • Instagram: last posted 8 hours ago with 3.8 million followers.
  • Twitter: last posted 1 day ago with 923.7k followers.
  • Facebook: last posted 1 month ago with 2.3 million followers.
  • YouTube: last posted 1 month ago with 5.37 million followers.
4. Holy cow. I cannot even begin to explain how well Duolingo's social media team is doing. Not only are they extremely consistent with posts, but the creativity and movement with trends caught me off guard. It was almost like their accounts weren't associated with a bigger brand and just a separate "meme" page. This evidently paid dividends as their social media has been blowing up. The only account that looks to be "slacking" a bit is their Facebook. The others are thriving with consistency and engagement.

Conclusion/Deduction

After taking a look at these five businesses that range in popularity and size, it's safe to say that the overall international success of certain businesses doesn't necessarily correlate to the same success in the social media space.

Out of the five, Apple and Amazon are by far the most successful in terms of gross income and worldwide popularity. Although this translated into social media popularity for Apple, Amazon's media presence didn't seem nearly as potent.

Additionally, I've noticed that the business with the biggest social media presence out of these five was by far Duolingo. This was unexpected as my hypothesis going into this was the complete opposite. From an oblivious perspective, It seemed that the niche desire of multilingualism wouldn't translate too well with product advertisements. I was completely wrong, as their social media presence was filled with trendy, high-output promotions. As someone who is part of a younger demographic, I completely understand how their output of content would do so well. In fact, after doing all this research, I believe that social media accounts should be run by trusted young adults with ample content creation experience.

In conclusion, I've learned how some businesses take a more traditional straightforward approach of advertisement, while others take to creativity. This has been fun to research and I'm still very confused as to why Apple has such a large Twitter presence with 0 posts!

  1. Hi Austin, great review of a variety of businesses, and I enjoyed your blog about the suprises you found. I also found some wierdness with Twitter in some of the businesses I reviewed, and I found it very intriguqing that Apple has such a huge Twitter presence, but it is has no active managment of posts. I appreciate that your review was so open minded, and how your perspectives were changed after digging into some of the social media management, especially in the case of Duolingo...it sounds like that business has actually put some smart and creative people to actively manage their social media engagment, instead of treating like an afterthought like quite a few other business seem to do. I am an older adult myself, 51yo, but I totally agree with your comment about putting more young and creative people in charge of social media engagment who already have the experience, drive, and passion to actively engage on a variety of platforms.

  2. Hey Austin, great post! I can't believe I didn't think about doing Duolingo. For them all the time and I know that they actively try to be edgy online. I think that that is a prime example of not always having to follow the norm and still getting a following. It kind of reminds me of a guy named Tony who sells LED signs and does politically incorrect advertisements. 52,000,000 TikTok followers absolutely insane. Fun fact, when TikTok briefly shut down, Duolingo was putting out advertisements saying, "oh, now you want to learn Chinese?" I thought that that was pretty funny so thanks for the laughs while I was reading this. I hope you have a great day and I look forward to seeing what you write next!
